Essential Puppy Supplies

Containment and Comfort

Crate: We recommend sizing crates by height rather than weight, since a taller crate accommodates a medium poodle’s full grown height comfortably. Look for a crate at least 21 inches high. For our medium poodles, we recommend the MidWest Homes for Pets 36-Inch iCrate, a double-door folding crate with a divider panel, leak-proof tray, and secure latches, which lets you adjust the size as your puppy grows. You can sometimes find used crates on Facebook Marketplace, and if you do, just check that the height is enough for your puppy full grown.

Puppy Pen/Exercise Fence: MidWest Homes for Pets 36-Inch Exercise Pen, 36 inches high, 16 sq ft of play space, foldable, no door design. This is a great size for during the day when you don’t want to leave the puppy enclosed in just a crate while you’re home but can’t give constant attention.

Why Use a Pen

Keeping your puppy in a pen when you cannot supervise them directly helps with bladder control, builds good habits early, and makes the transition to being trusted loose in the house or outdoors much smoother.

Feeding Tips: - Add warm water to kibble and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving - This helps with digestion and makes food more appealing - Feed 3-4 times daily for puppies under 4 months, then transition to 2-3 times daily

Healthy Treats and Additions

Goat’s milk: continue giving goat’s milk daily through the first few months, then begin slowing down round 6 months as your puppy has nearly reached fully growth.
Full-fat cottage cheese or 4% Greek yogurt
Chicken gizzards, beef, andchicken liver are also cheap meat that you can find at walmart or your local grocery and can be given Gizzards I would wait a few months for those. rotate on different days We give beeg and chicken liver weekly to our breeding poodles. It has the b12 and vitamens fresh that they need. I boil for a few minutes and then cool.
Liver (cooked), give about twice a week, since liver has a lot of B vitamins that puppies need

HEALTH & VETERINARY CARE

Important: 3-Year Health Guarantee

Your puppy comes with a 3-year health guarantee according to the contract.

To activate and validate this guarantee, you must take your puppy to your veterinarian within 72 hours of receiving them for a health examination. This vet check is required by the contract to make the health guarantee valid.

Vaccinations

Your puppy comes with their first two sets of vaccines (6 weeks and 8 weeks).

Upcoming Vaccine Schedule: - 12 weeks: DHPP + optional vaccines - 16 weeks: DHPP + Rabies - Consult your vet about additional vaccines and whether they’re necessary for your area

Deworming

Poodle puppies need regular deworming to stay healthy.

Deworming Schedule: - Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old - Then monthly until 6 months - Continue every 3 months for life

First Vet Visit

Schedule within 3 days of bringing puppy home. Your vet should check: - Overall health examination - Verify vaccination records - Discuss spay/neuter timing

Call Your Vet Immediately If

Vomiting or diarrhea lasting over 6 hours
Refusal to eat for over 12 hours
Lethargy
Difficulty breathing
Seizures
Uncontrolled bleeding
Suspected poisoning

GROOMING YOUR POODLE

Daily brushing from puppyhood prevents matting
Weekly ear checks. I clean with cotten balls with ACV and if inflamed Rose water. I can also post the name of the ear drops I use for infections of all kinds including yeast and microbial.
Trim nails every 2-3 weeks This is very important to keep up as they can become afraid to do this and need medical itnervention if you do not have this routinely part of their schedule.
Between 1.5 and 2 years the puppy coat changes to adult coat, so daily brushing becomes non-negotiable during this transition
Start professional grooming within a month of receiving your puppy. No need to delay. And if you are grooming yourself I am working on the puppies with a weekly bath and groom before you get your puppy. But you will receive your puppy during the fear stage of their life so it is good for you to remember that. They need good interactions. start with a quick bath with soap and a blow dryer on light and be careful around the face and save it for last as they had that the most. I start with the bottom and hold them close. If you h ave a second pair of hands so they dont fall it is a big help.
I recommend to Bathe weekly (every two to three weeks in winter)

Collar/Harness Sizing: girls typically Small to Medium, boys typically Small to Medium-Large

TRAINING & SOCIALIZATION

Critical Socialization Window

Birth to 16 weeks is the most important time for socialization. After 16 weeks, the window closes significantly.

The Rule of Sevens (by 7 weeks old, expose puppy to): - 7 different surfaces: grass, dirt, concrete, carpet, tile, wood, gravel - 7 different locations: yard, park, car rides, friend’s house, vet clinic - 7 different sounds: vacuum, doorbell, TV, music, traffic, children playing - 7 different people: different ages, genders, appearances - 7 different textures: metal, plastic, fabric, leather, paper - 7 different movements: stairs, ramps, tunnels, wobbly surfaces Do not have your puppy climbing stairs. They are still a toddler and they bones are not connected well at this age. They are fully in position only at 18 months. So no long runs until 18 months. You can do short walks around the neighborhood but not long hikes and no climbing many steps until 18 months.

Basic Commands

Start immediately with “Look at Me,” name recognition, Sit, Come, and Leave It. Keep sessions to 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times daily, positive reinforcement only.

Potty Training

We use alfalfa pellets in a boot pan or litter box placed in the pen. This is more natural than puppy pads, and it’s what the puppies are already used to. Litter Pan Training with Alfalfa Pellets Video

EXERCISE & PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

8-12 weeks: short play (15-20 min, 3-4x/day), gentle walks (5-10 min), no stairs, no jumping from heights
3-6 months: walks up to 15-20 min, still avoid excess stairs, swimming is great low-impact exercise
6-12 months: 20-30 min walks 2x/day
12-18 months: gradual increase; AKC sports and long-distance running should wait until 18 months, since growth plates aren’t closed until then

TEETHING

Puppies begin losing their baby teeth around 3-4 months, with adult teeth fully in by around 6-7 months. Offer appropriate chew toys during this time, and keep an eye out for retained baby teeth, which your vet should check at follow-up visits.
